What is a mica band heater?
Mica band heaters are electric heaters that clamp and transfer heat to different types of surfaces. Mica band heaters are typically used to heat flat and cylindrical surfaces. All of these heaters operate on the basis of electrical conduction, although some may use a combination of electrical conduction and convection. Some band heaters are clamped around the inside diameter of a surface, while most applications require the heater to be clamped around the outside diameter of a cylindrical element to transfer heat from the outside.
Mica band heaters are made of mica, an insulating mineral. The heating element is wrapped around a mica core and then bent together to form a mica heater. Although mica heaters only reach a maximum temperature of 850 degrees Fahrenheit, their resistance to water and chemicals makes them a popular choice for harsh operating environments.
It is an affordable and reliable heater designed with high-quality nickel-chrome heating elements encapsulated in lightweight components for fast heat transfer. Temperature control is also available to ensure the heater operates on demand. Mica band heaters are an affordable and efficient way to heat cylindrical and flat surfaces that require external heat.
These types of heaters are used in a wide variety of industries due to their durability and flexibility. DZX Heaters has been a reliable and industry leading supplier of mica band heaters for many years. Depending on the industrial application, we can also provide band heaters with a variety of clamping technologies and construction styles (single piece band, double piece band).
Construction
1. Mica insulation to provide insulation and moisture resistance.
2. nickel-chromium resistance strips must be evenly wound to ensure stable heat distribution and reliable accuracy.
3. Stainless steel or aluminium sheath provides better thermal conductivity and resistance to high temperature oxidation/corrosion.
4. Terminal boxes are used to protect exposed terminals and prevent spillage.
5. stainless steel screw terminals for secure connection to windings and maximum amperage carrying capacity.
6. clamping bands for maintaining clamping pressure and firm contact with the cylinder surface, thus eliminating air gaps at the point of contact.
How do mica band heaters work?
These heaters operate on the conduction or convection principle. The heating element is encapsulated in a metal sheath and insulated within a mica core. In order to distribute the heat evenly, a nickel-chromium resistance strip is used as the heating element, which is precisely wound around the dielectric material. When energised, the heating tape will transfer heat to another object using a controlled method. This useful heat is then transferred to the desired location using convection or conduction heating techniques.
